Search engines moved starting in 2007 from showing web pages to universal search incorporating web, video, photo, news and other results in one result page. YouTube now accounts for a large and growing percentage of Google searches.

This means marketers have an opportunity to be found through many types of media, especially video. For internet marketing, it provides a new channel for lead generation. Below you’ll learn some tips for doing search engine optimization (SEO) for video.

The starting point for video is great content that people want to watch and share. But many marketers leave a lot on the table by not optimizing their video for SEO. Optimizing your video by adding metadata, or data about your data, can have a big impact on SEO.

Here are 5 tips for doing SEO for Video:

1. Maximize the title

Include at least one of your focus keywords in your video title.

2. Use the description

Most video sites let you add a description of the video. Treat your video title like a meta-description tag.

3. Love the tags

Where ever you can add or edit tags for the video, do so with your focus keywords.

4. Make the file name descriptive

File names are crawled by the search engines.

5. Add detail to your links

Instead of “Click Here” to watch a video, use a more detailed description like “Click Here for SEO Video Optimization Tips.”
