Digital Marketing Agency
An agent, or agency is an individual or group acting on behalf of, and in the best interest of another entity.
Digital marketing is the overall approach of attracting and engaging potential customers via online channels and devices. These methods include website creation, search engine optimization, pay per click advertising, email marketing, social media, display advertising and other channels to drive traffic and conversions.
Thus, a digital marketing agency performs some or all of the digital marketing functions of a separate company, typically multiple other companies. The business relationship is typically either project based, or retainer based, and may or may not include traditional marketing, creative and branding as well.
Project based services: A service that has a defined end point, such as building a website, or doing a one time SEO audit/optimization. Event marketing is a classic example of a project based service.
Retainer based services: A set of services that are intended to be ongoing. Retainer based services tend to be multi-channel, although they can be confined to one element of digital marketing, such as SEO. Most agencies prefer retainer based services since it makes cash flow more predictable.
There exists a grey area between marketing agencies and system integrators, who offer website and application development, combined with broader technical expertise as their primary focus. Typically you can identify a digital marketing agency by whether or not their primary business is selling marketing services, not software or technical back-end development.
